Container of Charity

management, scrum, software development

We just can’t get any of our Scrum teams to agree to a small penalty for arriving late to daily standups. Three official projects now and all of them have turned down the idea of having a cup with $1 donations if you show up late, aka a container of charity.

I plan on trying to get it agreed to on my next unofficial Scrum project, but it may not be part of our culture. We definitely have the late meetings complex that plagues just about anyplace.

A suggested penalty: Anyone showing up late has to buy everyone else ice cream. I haven’t actually done this myself, but know someone who did it and he said it was quite effective. I cut down on the lateness significantly, and people were not so bummed out, because, after all, they would be getting some ice cream.

Ice cream, now I could get behind that one with my sweet tooth. Currently at least one member of the team objected to a container of charity so I don’t get to do it on this project. As everyone is showing up on time so far or even a bit early at least for the first standup I suppose the point of it is understood at least.

I try to remember that despite my preferences much of Scrum is letting the team decide how to self-organize.
