260 Meetings for the New Year

management, software development

Setting up one-on-ones today:

  • 10 employees.
  • 1 30 minute one-on-one per employee per week.
  • 6 months of meetings scheduled through the end of June.

Turns out this is 260 meetings over the next six months. The raw number of meetings would be enough to send the average developer running to Monster. Luckily the one-on-ones are really a handy tool to make sure at a minimum everyone gets at least 30 uninterrupted minutes with their manager to communicate concerns up, get help, vent, and get coaching or mentoring.

Have you been listening to Manager Tools (http://www.manager-tools.com) by any chance?

It’s a great resource for managers and team leaders and they recommend 30 minute one-on-ones…

Yup, I got sucked into Manager tools as it was just starting out. There advice to do 30 minute one-on-ones along with similiar advice from books and colleagues led me to finally start implementing them in Feburary of 2006 and it’s gone really well.

Manager tools though was probably the final push since they’re so good at providing the details that make it easier to just start doing it. Still I waited a good 7-9 months after their podcasts on the subject to finally kick in and do them.
